The series is often referred to as Kare Kano for short. The title translates to His and Her Circumstances. The manga ran from February 1996 to April 2005. It was adapted into an anime by Gainax. The anime ran from October 2, 1998 to March 23, 1999. The anime was written and directed by Anno_Hideaki, the only anime of his that was made with a female target audience in mind. Anno altered the tone of the series and emphasized that this story was a study of relationships and put a strong emphasis on the dialogue. The visual style for the anime uses plenty of art shifts like pastel freeze frames, manga panel-esque images, and even a few live action shots. However, Tsuda strongly disliked the way Anno chose to adapt her story, feeling that it was too comedic and that there was not enough focus on the romantic development, and ultimately Anno left the project before the series was finished; Tsuda also forbid the animators from making further seasons and a more complete adaptation of the manga has not been made. Tsurumaki Kazuya took over as director for the last few episodes; this also led to the anime ending on an inconclusive note whereas the manga was able to conclusively resolve the story. The anime's soundtrack was composed by Sagisu Shirou who remixed some of the tracks he composed for this series and used them in the Rebuild of Evangelion films. The characters were designed by Hiramitsu_Tadashi. Miyazawa Yukino is the perfect female student. She is beautiful, has superb grades, and has an elegant and classy demeanor. She is the envy of all the female students at her high school. Unbeknownst to her peers, her image is really an elaborate facade. When she goes home, she shows her true self: she is temperamental and a slob, often dressing in track suit and wears her hair messily. She only studies intensively so that she can maintain her image and because she loves being praised. However, a rival suddenly appears, threatening to dethrone her position as the perfect student, Arima Souichirou. Like Yukino, he has a perfect image: he is handsome, has superb grades, and a pleasant demeanor. He is not interested in dethroning Yukino, but Yukino considers him to be a major threat and plots to defeat him, but things get more complicated once Arima confesses his romantic feelings towards Yukino. Yukino tries to brush it off, but she gradually realizes that she has begun to admire him. Arima also inadvertently discovers Yukino's true self and he takes the opportunity to blackmail Yukino into helping him do student council work. Despite the awkward circumstances surrounding the start of their relationship, Yukino finds herself reciprocating Arima's feelings. She also learns that Arima's perfect student image is also an elaborate facade like her own. Once the two of them accept each other, they resolve to follow their true selves and work together to overcome any obstacle that may arise from them being their true selves. Yukino gradually gains more true friends who come to accept who she really is. For Arima, being himself turns out to be much more difficult for him. He still hides deep emotional wounds from his past and he fears that he has a dark side within him that will emerge and ruin everything if he lets his guard down. . . The series often rapidly alternates between comedy and drama. As the series goes on, the story becomes considerably darker in tone, particularly in the manga.
