Now Viewing: michael_bayTag type: Character American filmmaker. He was born on February 17, 1965, in Los Angeles. He is known for directing and producing big-budget, high-concept action films characterized by fast cutting, stylistic visuals and extensive use of special effects, including frequent depictions of explosions, something he has loved depicting ever since he was a little kid, when he filmed blowing up his toy train with a fire cracker. He is most well known for directing the Transformers live action films. Besides explosions, he is very fond of showing sunsets, helicopters, and using sports cars during chases. The American military often feature prominently in his films and the soldiers are mostly portrayed as heroic. Bay began his filmmaking career as a teenager, working as an intern for George Lucas on Raiders of the Lost Ark. He initially thought the movie would flop, but he was so impressed upon seeing the finished product that he decided to become a director. He started off directing commercials and music videos before making his feature film debut with the 1995 buddy cop action comedy Bad Boys. This film was relatively low budget, but its success, as well as the success of his next film, The Rock, led to him directing increasingly high budget action films. He is also known for being a highly polarizing figure in the film industry. On one hand, his films are consistent box office successes. On the other hand, most of his films have received mixed to scathingly negative reviews from film critics. Bay himself is aware of his reputation and in on-screen appearances, often pokes fun at how people perceive him.
