Now Viewing: nagai_gouTag type: Artist A male mangaka born on September 6, 1945 in Wajima, Ishikawa Prefecture. He was the son of Nagai Fujiko and Nagai Yoshio, and was the fourth brother out of five. His father passed away when Gou was young, and he and the rest of his family moved to Tokyo after Yoshio's passing. Nagai was influenced by the work of Tezuka Osamu and Gustave Dore. His career as a mangaka began as a result of a crisis he suffered. When he was studying for Waseda University, he suffered a severe case of diarrhea that lasted for three weeks. It was so bad that Gou feared that he may actually die and felt a desire to leave something of his own in the world as proof of his existence, so he decided to pursue what he loved as a child, creating a manga of his own. His sickness was eventually diagnosed as catarrh of the colon, and he recovered, but that didn't sway him from becoming a mangaka. He worked with his brother Nagai_Yasutaka on his first manga projects and eventually released a manga that served as a prototype for Kuro_no_Shishi. His true debut came in November 1967 with the comedy Meakashi_Polikichi and in the first few years of his career he worked on short comedy manga before his breakthrough on August 1, 1968 with manga's first ecchi comedy Harenchi_Gakuen. Its popularity and surrounding controversy paved the way for a highly prolific career as a mangaka. Nagai has worked on wide variety of genres, but is famous for his highly envelope-pushing style. He was willing to show more violence and sexuality than his peers at the time, and he was doing this in manga that were published in shounen magazines. This gained him numerous fans and paved the way for future mangaka to go further in terms of content, but it also consistently got his work in trouble with censors and parents' organizations, and would eventually lead to him getting his later work published by seinen magazines instead. His work is so influential that he could be considered the father of various anime/manga genres. With Cutie_Honey, he popularized the idea of a magical girl heroine who transforms into a powerful warrior form to do battle against various enemies. With Mazinger_Z, he became the father of Super Robot anime as we know it, centering the manga around a hot-blooded hero who directly pilots the eponymous giant robot to fight against evil. With Devilman, he popularized dark fantasy in manga, inspiring subsequent mangaka to directly tackle more grim subject matter in their work. He is known for his extensive cross-referencing. His anime/manga will frequently reference and allude to his other works. The protagonist of one of his manga will likely show up in another as a cameo and full blown crossovers are quite common. He is also famous for frequently giving his heroes sideburns.
