He was born on December 21, 1948 in Washington DC, United States. He notably had a difficult childhood, growing up before the Civil Rights Movement began. As a child he attended various segregated schools and struggled with a stutter. When the Civil Rights Movement began, he participated in various protests including one in 1969 where he and other students held the Morehouse College board of trustees hostage in order to reform the school's curriculum, as well as getting involved with various members of Black Power movement. His mother became concerned for his safety so she sent him off to Los Angeles. He had already started acting in college plays while at Morehouse and began acting professionally during the 1970s, making his film debut in the 1972 film Together for Days. For the next two decades, he mostly acted in supporting roles and struggled with a serious drug addiction that he finally overcame in 1991 when he made his first breakthrough role in the movie Jungle Fever. His performance was so acclaimed that the Cannes Film Festival made a special Best Supporting Actor award just for him. He then made his major film breakthrough with 1994's Pulp Fiction, and since then became a prolific lead and supporting actor. Thanks to his appearance in many popular films, he became the highest all time box office star with a $4.9053 billion+ total box office gross. He frequently plays fierce and intimidating characters who are often very profane. In his adult-oriented films, he is famous for often saying some variation of "motherfucker," which has become a sort of catch phrase for him. The word is also special to him in that he used it as a tool to help him overcome his stutter. He is married to actress LaTanya Richardson. He is most famous for playing Jules Winnfield in Pulp Fiction and Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He frequently works with and is friends with Quentin Tarantino, and has had a role in every Tarantino directed film since Pulp Fiction. He is also an anime fan, playing the lead role in Afro_Samurai and playing the main villain in the Kite live action adaptation.
