Now Viewing: takeuchi_mariyaTag type: Character 竹内 まりや A female Japanese city pop/disco singer/songwriter born on March 20, 1955 in Taisha, Shimane. She grew up in a musical family and played the piano and the guitar. She started her professional career in 1978 by participating in recording sessions with Sugi Masamichi and releasing her debut single Modotte-Oide, Watashi no Jikan. She was most successful during the 1980s when she became one of the most prominent artists of a musical genre known as city pop, which was also most popular during said decade. After the 1980s, her singing career steadily slowed down and it would not be until the 2000s when she would begin releasing new albums. Outside of singing, she is also the owner of her family's Japanese inn Takenoya. She, and the city pop genre, received a resurgence in interest during the 2010s when one of her songs, Plastic_Love, was rediscovered by a new generation outside of Japan, and became popular once again. Most images depicting her are usually based off of a photo from an earlier single of hers, Sweetest Music. She is married to fellow city pop star, Yamashita Tatsuro.
