One of the most well known and well regarded Japanese fighting game players. He was born on May 19, 1981 and specializes in 2D fighting games. In the West, he is often referred to as the Beast or his first name while in Japan, he is often referred to by his family or as Ume.

He began going to arcades to play games at the age of 10 and first began challenging other players to Street Fighter II Dash (Champion Edition) though he felt shy doing so and often asked them for permission to challenge them. He credits this experience as the time when he began to enjoy playing competitively. When he was in middle school, he began making a name for himself through the game Vampire Hunter and at one point managed 286 consecutive wins. In 1998, he participated in his first US tournament with Street Fighter Zero 3 and won against Alex Valle, who was known for being the winner of the US National Street Fighter Alpha 3 Tournament. As his reputation grew, a book about him, titled Versus, was published in 2001. He would go on to predominantly participate in Street Fighter tournaments. He has consistently participated in tournaments every year since 1997 except 2008, when he briefly retired. After he came out of retirement, he has focused his attention on Street Fighter IV and its updated iterations. In 2012, he published his own book in Japan, called Kachitsuzukeru ishiryoku (勝ち続ける意志力), The Willpower to Keep Winning.

He is particularly famous for his exploits in Street Fighter tournaments; the most well known being a comeback he pulled off against Justin Wong at EVO 2004 in a game of Street Fighter III: Third Strike. In the second round, Daigo as Ken manages to completely turn the fight by perfectly parrying Justin's Chun-li's special. When he accomplished this feat, he had so little health left that even the weakest attack would KO his character. After this unexpected comeback in the second round, he went on to win the match. The parry is famous enough that it's included as a trial mode challenge in Street Fighter III: Third Strike online. The same fight is also the source of the meme, "Let's go Justin!" This fight is also parodied in the anime Acchi Kocchi where female lead Tsumiki pulls off the same maneuver as Daigo in a pseudo Street Fighter game and is also the subject of a book.

He also plays Guilty Gear and is also the source of the meme, "Umehara ga Kimetaaaaa!" (translates as Umehara has decided the destiny) which was screamed out by an announcer upon witnessing Umehara as Sol Badguy defeating his opponents' Faust.

He also has the honor of having a manga based off of him called To Live is to Game which started in 2013.
