Now Viewing: utada_hikaruTag type: Character 宇多田光 Tag refers to images referencing the popular bilingual Japanese-American pop/R&B singer/songwriter. She is also affectionately nicknamed Hikki. She was born on January 19, 1983 in New York, United States. She came from a musical family: her father was record producer Utada Teruzane and her mother was enka singer Keiko Fuji. She was interested in music from a young age and was already writing her own songs at the age of 10, and even sung alongside her mother. When she was still a teenager, she decided to become a professional singer and recorded an English album titled Precious under the name Cubic U. The album was never publicly released in America due to internal problems with EMI, but was eventually released in Japan on January 28, 1998. Utada then moved to Japan to attend school while pursuing her music career at the same time. She made her breakthrough with the album First Love on March 10, 1999. Said breakthrough was so successful that it ended up becoming the top selling Asian album of all time, selling over ten million units worldwide. From that point on, she primarily worked in Japan, singing in Japanese. While she has recorded American albums, she was not able to achieve the same level of success that she did in Japan. She is well known for being the singer of all the vocal theme songs in the Kingdom_Hearts franchise. The franchise makes use of her bilingual skills by having her record both a Japanese and an English version of each song. Outside of singing/songwriting, she is known for her love of and skill at Tetris. She was married and divorced twice. She was first married to music video director Kazuaki Kiriya who directed a few of her music videos. The second marriage was with bartender Francesco Calianno whom she had a son with.
