Now Viewing: bad_(song)Tag type: Copyright Tag refers to the iconic 1987 song and accompanying music video by Michael_Jackson. 'Bad' in the song and video's context is closer in meaning to being badass, tough, and true to one's roots, not to describe something as low quality. The music video is one of Michael Jackson's famed short film-esque music videos. Its story was written by Richard Price and the video was directed by Martin Scorsese who is famous for directing gritty crime dramas, which the music video evokes the feel of. The video is also influenced by the musical crime drama West Side Story. The song is also inspired by a real life story Jackson read about in Time or Newsweek magazine although the video's outcome is different from the true story. Jackson plays a teen boy named Daryl who grew up in a poverty and crime-stricken neighborhood. Unlike his friends, he has managed to get into an upper class private school thanks to his tennis skills. Daryl, pleased with his experience at the school, returns to his neighborhood after a school term ends and reunites with his old friends led by Mini Max, played by Wesley Snipes. Unfortunately, what Daryl hopes will be a happy reunion between friends ends up not being the case. He and his friends realize how much Daryl has changed, Daryl feels moral discomfort at Max's criminal ways while Max and Daryl's childhood friends view Daryl's change in mentality as a betrayal and accuse Daryl of no longer being 'bad.' The increasing tension between the friends prompts Daryl to prove to them that he's still 'bad.' The video is notably shot in black and white until the eponymous song is performed where it suddenly switches to color. Jackson's outfit (a black leather jacket with multiple belts and chains and black pants) during his performance of "Bad" is as iconic as the song.
