Now Viewing: bombermanTag type: Copyright Long running action game franchise created by Hudson Soft and their most well known franchise. The original game debuted in 1983 for the MSX and the ZX Spectrum release of the game was known as Eric and the Floaters. However, the name Bomberman stuck and became the title of the franchise. The games star a cute and cartoonish chibi looking robot with a helmet shaped head named Bomberman who's main form of attack is strategically planting bombs to wipe out enemies. Ironically, Bomberman's iconic chibi appearance was actually a result of technological limitations. The original game's box art had more realistic looking cyborg designs suggesting that that was what Bomberman and co. were originally intended to look like but due to technological limitations, Bomberman's appearance was simplified into the cartoonish chibi style which he would retain for virtually every game afterwards. Bomberman Act Zero attempted to bring back the grittier looking Bomberman seen in the original game's box art, but the Bomberman's design and the game in general received strong critical and fan backlash and Hudson Soft quickly regretted making the game. Subsequent Bomberman games retained Bomberman's iconic chibi appearance. Bomberman is thrown into large maze like arenas and has to take out his opponents with the bombs. However, the player must be careful as Bomberman's own bombs can also kill him. Early games had minimal plot but the first game stated that he wanted to become a human. Later games keep Bomberman as the robot design and also expand on the plot with extended single player story modes. However, the series is most famous for its fast placed and frantic multiplayer modes which pit the players as various Bomberman characters against each other in the mazes. Players use bombs, power ups, the environment, and their own wits to blow up the other players. In some games, defeated players can still sabotage the remaining players making the battles more chaotic and also giving a chance for the defeated player to make a comeback as some games will revive the defeated player if they manage to take out one of the surviving players. Bomberman has received two anime adaptations: Bomberman B Daman Bakugaiden and Bomberman Jetters.
