It is a dark crime drama/thriller TV series created by Vince Gilligan, which ran from January 28, 2008 to September 23, 2013. The show stars Bryan Cranston, Aaron Paul, Anna Gunn, and Dean Norris. The soundtrack was composed by Dave Porter. It is set in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and tells the story of Walter White, a high school chemistry teacher in the middle of a bleak middle life crisis. His students don't care about his classes and his pay is so low that he has to work at a car wash as well just to pay the bills. His teenage son, Walt Jr, has cerebral palsy and suffers from frequent bullying and his wife is pregnant. Things get worse when Walt collapses at work and discovers that he has terminal lung cancer and does not have long to live. Walt's DEA agent brother-in-law Hank offers to let Walt tag along while he's busting a meth lab. During the raid, Walt spots former student Jesse Pinkman fleeing the scene, and hatches a plan to earn enough money to provide for his family after he's gone. He blackmails Jesse into being his assistant and Walt secretly enters the drug business cooking meth, adopting the persona Heisenberg. In his quest to provide enough money for his family, Walt must now contend with ruthless fellow gangsters while keeping his activities a secret from his family and the public at large, but as Heisenberg's reputation grows, Walt finds his humanity gradually slipping. . . The series was based off of the idea of change: Gilligan wanted to create a show where hero becomes a villain, or as he put it, "turn Mr. Chips into Scarface." Another source of inspiration was a dark joke shared between Gilligan and fellow writer Thomas Schnauz who went through a period of unemployment together. At the time, they joked that the only way out of their situation was to put a "meth lab in the back of an RV and [drive] around the country cooking meth and making money." The title is a Southern US colloquialism that means "raising hell" or to go wild. The show's premise is coincidentally similar to the crime comedy Weeds, which was airing when Gilligan was still pitching the show to producers. Gilligan was concerned that Breaking Bad would be seen as too similar, but the producers assured him that Breaking Bad was different enough to be successful. The show's story heavily revolves around karma and according to Gilligan, the main lesson he wanted to teach was that actions have consequences. The series received widespread critical praise from the start, winning a total of 16 Emmys, and entered the Guinness Book of World Records as the most critically praised show of all time. While the show was not a massive success from the start, the show's ratings notably increased with each season with the final season seeing a sudden massive increase in viewership. Gilligan attributed the series' success to the on demand video service Netflix and positive word-of-mouth. The show's success boosted the careers of not only its two main actors, Cranston and Paul, who both made more movie appearances after the show's premiere, but also various members of the supporting cast such as Giancarlo Esposito who played antagonist Gustavo Fring and went on to become a popular casting choice for villains in other TV shows and games. The series spawned a 2015 spinoff/prequel titled Better Call Saul[i/], which focuses on the character Saul Goodman, and a 2019 sequel film titled [i]El Camino, which focuses on Jesse Pinkman. Both works were also created by Gilligan.
