Executives were skeptical of his casting since he had primarily been known as a comedic actor and did not feel he would make a convincing action hero, but the film's success turned Bruce Willis into a popular action star. He often plays sarcastic and tough heroes. He was a highly popular actor from the 1980s to the 2000s, starring in many popular and iconic American films, but during the 2010s, his status steadily dwindled as his films performed poorly both critically and financially to the point that the majority of his output in the last few years of his acting career was in small roles in direct to video films although he would still feature prominently in promotion for those films thanks to his big name status. This even led to the Razzie Awards creating a special category called Worst Bruce Willis performance in a 2021 movie, since he had starred in eight films within that year. Willis retired from acting on March 30, 2022, due to being diagnosed with aphasia.
