He is a stand up comedian/actor born as Christopher Julius "Chris" Rock III in Andrews, South Carolina on February 7, 1965. He is the oldest brother in his family and one of his brothers, Anthony Rock, is also a comedian/actor. As a young boy, his family moved multiple times before settling in Beford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. Rock took the bus to go to school in predominantly white neighborhoods, which made his the target of white bullies. The bullying got so intense that Rock had to be pulled out of high school and he ended up working in fast food jobs instead. He started performing as a comedian in 1984 at New York's Catch a Rising Star venue. Rock's performance caught the eye of Eddie Murphy, who was the most popular African American comedian/actor at the time, and Murphy gave him the chance to make his film debut in 1987 in an one scene role in Beverly Hills Cop 2. Rock steadily appeared in more high profile roles in his comedy and acting and had his first breakthrough as part of the long-running sketch comedy Saturday Night Live. Rock's time on the show lasted from 1990 to 1993, and even after leaving the show as a regular, had returned to it as host multiple times later in his career. After leaving the show, he became successful as a solo stand up comedian and received a steady stream of film roles as an actor. In the 2000s, Rock took a more active role creatively on his film projects, often not only acting in them but also contributing to their scripts. He is also the creator of the sitcom Everybody Hates Chris, which is a fictionalized version of Rock's youth in the 1980s. Rock doesn't appear onscreen, but acts as a narrator, while Tyler James Williams played his teenage self. His comedy comments on and pokes fun at African American social and racial issues as well as interpersonal relationships between men and women. He has a high-pitched youthful sounding voice and is notable for consistently looking younger than he actually was.
