It was an anime TV series that ran from February 16, 1997 to January 31, 1998. It was animated by Toei, directed by Sasaki Noriyo, written by Yamaguchi Ryouta, and had a soundtrack composed by Sahashi Toshihiko. The story follows the general premise of the original anime/manga, but this incarnation is notable for its different tone from most Cutie Honey works. While the original series was planned to target females, a schedule change started a chain of events that lead to it being retooled to targeting males. Thanks to Cutie Honey's surprising popularity amongst girls and women, the decision was made to create a Cutie Honey series with them as the target audience and Cutie Honey Flash was born. The anime notably debuted after the conclusion of Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon's final season, Sailor Stars, and it inherited numerous staff members from that anime. Its art style also more closely resembles the shoujo magical girl series of the 1990s. Although Honey still wears the same outfit, the fanservice surrounding her character is greatly toned down. The series also introduces quite a few characters and plot points that are unique to this series such as the rival Honey, Misty Honey.
