Her full name is Sandara Park and she is one of the older members of the popular Korean hip hop girl group 2NE1. Unlike the younger members, she was already an established star prior to joining the group. She was named after revolutionary war hero Kim Yushin, whose nickname was San Da Ra. Her father was a businessman who lost his fortunes, forcing the family to move to the Philippines in order to find work, and it was there that Dara's career began. She first became well known as a participant in the reality show talent search program Star Circle Quest, which she participated in in 2004, and finishing in second place. She then joined Star Magic, becoming a popular actress and pop singer, becoming so popular that she was credited as being one of the leading figures of the Reverse Hallyu Wave as well as being compared to, another famous Korean musician, Boa in terms of crossover appeal: Boa was the first Korean artist to break into the Japanese market, and Dara did the same for the Philippines. In the same year, YG Entertainment, the company that would eventually form 2NE1, took notice of Dara after seeing her in a documentary titled My Name is Sandara Park, and offered her workshop classes in South Korea, which Dara accepted in 2005. On August 2007, Dara returned to South Korea to further her career and joined 2NE1 upon its inception in 2009. Thanks to growing up in the Philippines, she is a polyglot, fluent in both Korean and Tagalog as well as a multitude of other languages and notably contributes heavily to 2NE1's PR. She is also the older sister of male Korean singer Sang-hyun, a member of MBLAQ. Outside of her musical work, she is known for her lack of visible physical aging throughout her over decade-long career. While 2ne1 are known for wearing over the top outfits in music videos, Dara is also known for tending to receive the most over the top hairstyles from stylists.
