A Canadian man who wears a red and black suit and a mask with white eyes. He is a mercenary and assassin with an extremely fast healing factor and is known as the Merc with the Mouth for virtually never staying quiet for an extended period of time and constantly joking around. He is a Marvel Comics character created by Rob Liefeld and Fabian Nicenza and debuted in The New Mutants #98 in 1991 and is notably one of the more comedic characters in the Marvel canon. While he was initially a supporting antagonist, he became increasingly popular, eventually becoming an anti-hero and gaining comics, games, and movies where he is the protagonist, most of which are much more comedy-oriented than other superhero comics in the Marvel verse. He is based off of the DC character Deathstroke complete with a similar name, abilities, and costume. Liefeld was a big fan of Teen Titans, which had Deathstroke as part of its cast, and came up with Deadpool's name and appearance. Nicenza noticed Deadpool's similarity to Deathstroke upon seeing Deadpool's design and gave Deadpool's real name as Wade Wilson as a reference to Deathstroke whose real name is Slade Wilson. However, the two characters are radically different in personality and Nicenza was responsible for coming up with Deadpool's persona. Deadpool in his early appearances was portrayed in a more serious fashion, but when he got his own series in 1997 written by Joe Kelly and drawn by Ed McGuinness, his portrayal became more comedic, gaining a lot of the character quirks that he would be famous for.

Deadpool's life before becoming Deadpool is something of a mystery and he himself gives conflicting accounts about what happened, but he was a regular human mercenary probably named Wade Wilson who was a in a relationship with Vanessa Carslyle/Copycat. Unfortunately, Wilson was diagnosed with terminal cancer and the only hope of prolonging his life was to go through with a special Weapon X program, which he agreed to do. The experience was a brutal one which gave him his superpowers and successfully prolonged his life at the cost of disfiguring him, necessitating his mask and suit, and driving him crazy. His insanity is manifested by him developing multiple voices in his head and being the sole character in his universe to actually be aware that he's in a comic book/movie/video game/animation etc. Deadpool often directly addresses the audience, makes all sorts of pop cultural references, demonstrates a strong awareness of genre conventions, and can even break the fourth wall to his advantage like using his life bar as a weapon in the middle of a fighting game match. Other characters are often bewildered by Deadpool's behavior, finding him impossible to predict or put up with for an extended period of time; one moment he appears to be a scatterbrained loon, the next a dangerous killer. He is highly proficient with guns and katanas and uses his healing factor to his advantage during fights. His healing factor is so strong that it makes him effectively immortal. Deadpool loves fighting and has no problem with brutally killing his opponents although he does not target innocents. Even though he often irritates others, he still has close friends like Cable, Weasel, and Blind Al.

He is also omnisexual with Nicienza describing him "as whatever sexual inclination his brain tells him in that moment. And then the moment passes." His favorite food is chimichangas.

He has been voiced by Nolan North (most games and cartoons), Tom Kenny (Marvel Super Hero Squad Online Game), John Kassir (X-Men Legends 2: Rise of Apocalypse and Marvel Ultimate Alliance), and Will Friedle (Ultimate Spider-Man) in cartoons and video games. In the anime Marvel Disk Avengers, he is voiced by Koyasu_Takehito.

Ryan Reynolds, the actor who eventually became the most closely associated with Deadpool for live action films, was introduced to the character after a friend sent him a scene from the comics where Deadpool name-drops Reynolds, describing his physical appearance as 'Ryan Reynolds crossed with a Shar-pei." After reading other comics with Deadpool, he became a passionate fan of the character, considering him to be his alter-ego, and after he finished Blade Trinity in 2004, began campaigning to make a Deadpool movie with himself playing Deadpool, a dream project for him. However, it would take over a decade for him to realize this dream. In the movie X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Reynolds got a chance to play Wade Wilson, but after he's turned into Deadpool, he is portrayed by a different actor, Scott Adkins. While Reynolds' portrayal of Wilson was comic-accurate, the film's portrayal of Deadpool was not, as his mouth was sewn shut. The film's performance financially and critically was considered disappointing in contrast to past X-men movies. Despite this setback, Reynolds pressed on and worked with director Tim Miller and writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick to create a CG test footage to show 20th century Fox what the Deadpool movie would look like, but the studio was still reluctant to make the movie and the footage was unreleased for a few years until someone secretly leaked it online. The footage, which shows Deadpool taking out some henchmen on a highway, was met with widely positive fan response and the massive fan demand finally convinced 20th Century Fox to make the movie with Reynolds as both Wilson and Deadpool and Miller as director. Reynolds also served as one of the producers of the film. The movie was released on February 12, 2016. The test footage scene was recreated in live action in the movie itself, which is considered to be a spinoff of the live action X-Men films. Unlike the other X-Men films, it is much more adult-oriented with explicit violence, profanity, and sexual content, and is also comparatively lower budget. The film is also more comedic in tone than the other X-men films.
