The game was directed by Tameem Antoniades and written by Antoniades and Alex Garland. The artwork was handled by Stuart Adcock and Alessandro Taini. The soundtrack was composed by Combichrist and Noisia. It is set in an alternate continuity from the original games where demons control the setting, Limbo City, and have brainwashed the population. Dante, in this game, an angry half demon/half angel young orphan with a strong hatred of the demons is one of the few who haven't been brainwashed. He is contacted by the rebel group The Order, run by his brother Vergil, which offers to recruit Dante and fight to free Limbo City from the demons because Dante has a special gene that can help combat the demons. Throughout the game, Dante travels back and forth between the grimy real world and the surreal and colorful Demon World where he battles the demons. Dante has the ability to switch between eight different weapons during combat. He can also alternate between Angel and Devil modes. It is the first Devil May Cry game to be developed by a Western development studio and is also the first Devil May Cry game to not be developed by an in-house Capcom studio. This, and the decision to reboot the series, was done because Capcom felt Devil May Cry was not selling as well as other game franchises and hoped Ninja Theory would be able to change that with this reboot. To that end, Theory designed the game with Western sensibilities in mind, starting with changing Dante's look. Originally, his design was more faithful to the original, but Capcom told Ninja Theory that Dante had to look different to appeal to a younger demographic, so he was redesigned to have short black hair and have a grittier image. While he keeps the black hair and grittier appearance, his face was altered from his appearance in the initial trailers to look like his voice actor Tim Philipps. He was also depicted as a smoker in initial trailers, but this character trait has been removed. Vergil and Mundus also appear in the game with different appearances. The former is derived from an unused concept design for the original Devil May Cry while the latter has been re-imagined as a bald human-looking demon who fancies himself a god. Despite these changes, the game is still a hack and slash character action game with an emphasis on combos. Dante is the main playable character but Vergil is also playable and has his own DLC campaign that takes place after the main story. The game notably has significantly more profanity than the original continuity games. It is also generally considered to be much easier than the previous Devil May Cry games. Along with Devil May Cry 2, this game is notorious for being one of the most controversial installments of the franchise. Initial trailers received strong backlash over Dante's significantly different appearance as well as other changes to the series mythos and gameplay. The backlash was exacerbated by some of the developers' comments and actions, which were interpreted by many original series fans as being disrespectful to the original series. The controversy persisted even after the game's release. On the review aggregate website Metacritic, professional critics/journalists gave the game an average score of 86/100 whereas the users of the site gave the game an average score of 4.8/10. The game also did not sell as well as Capcom had hoped and the company reduced its sales target from 2 million to 1.2 million copies. The game ultimately sold 2.4 million copies worldwide by June 2018. The game received a remastered version labeled Definitive Edition in 2015. After this game, the franchise returned to the original timeline with Devil May Cry 5, bringing back many of the creators of past Devil May Cry games. Although Devil May Cry 5 was promoted as a return to form for the franchise, director Itsuno Hideaki stressed that this was not done as a slight to the reboot because he believes that the reboot had its merits and was as important as the main series entries. This game's version of Dante is a playable fighter in Playstation All Stars Battle Royale which was released before this game.
