Now Viewing: doom_(game)Tag type: Copyright Tag refers to the iconic American first person shooter action horror series. The original game debuted on December 10, 1993. It was developed by id software for the PC and made a large impact on the video game industry and pop culture. It is often credited with popularizing the first person shooter genre. It also allowed players to customize their own maps and introduced online multiplayer. While the game was originally developed for the PC, it has been ported to virtually every other system made since the game's debut. The games' distinctive sound for a door opening has been used many times in subsequent media. The first two games are divided into three episodes. The first game was distributed through a shareware system where players can preview the first episode of the game and share it with their friends. However, if they wanted to play the whole game, they had to pay the full price of the game. The player plays as an unnamed space marine (usually referred to by fans as Doomguy) who has been posted on Union Aerospace Corporation's base on one of Mars's moons, Phobos. UAC is working on building portals and experimenting with teleportation. Unfortunately, one of their experiments goes wrong and all hell literally breaks loose as monsters from the underworld start pouring out of the portals and massacring everyone in Phobos except for the player. The monsters have their eyes set on wiping out the rest of humanity and it's up to Doomguy to survive and save the rest of humanity. The games were notable for their brutal violence and, as the player is dealing with demons from hell, lots of Satanic imagery. The monsters can also injure each other which will cause them to pick a fight with each other instead of Doomguy. The player can use their violent and uncooperative nature to his/her advantage. The games have multiple difficulty levels, from easiest to hardest: I'm too Young to Die, Hey Not too Rough, Hurt Me Plenty, Ultra-Violence, and Nightmare. The last difficulty vastly increases the amount of enemies, makes them more aggressive, and also makes them respawn leading to more frantic and action-packed levels where Doomguy will often be swarmed by an enormous amount of enemies. Bobby Prince's soundtrack for the first two games is heavily inspired by heavy metal music and many songs sound similar to pre-existing heavy metal songs. The game was also inspired by the movies Aliens and Evil Dead II. The game originally had a more complex narrative, called the Doom Bible, written by Tom Hall. However, programmer John Carmack rejected the Doom Bible in favor of the more straightforward narrative seen in the final product. Hall resigned since he didn't contribute much to the direction the game was going. The series title was inspired by a scene from the movie The Color of Money where Vincent Lauria, played by Tom Cruise, describes his custom pool cue with one word, "Doom." Doom was how Carmack viewed himself and his fellow developers "springing the game on the industry." The first two Dooms were followed by a sequel titled Doom 64 for the Nintendo 64, which notably has a darker visual style and replaced the heavy metal music with slower but ominous industrial soundtrack composed by Aubrey Hodges. Doom 3, in spite of what the number implies, is a reboot that changes the gameplay to a more horror-oriented focus with the player exploring dimly lit levels and fighting comparatively fewer monsters at once. After a decade long absence, the franchise returned with Doom 2016, continuing where Doom 64 left off. This installment returns to the more fast-paced action-oriented tone of the early games, and was followed by a sequel titled Doom Eternal, which revisits the hell on earth concept of Doom 2. It has been adapted into a live action movie, comic book, and novels. For some reason, the adaptations tend to change the origin of the demons and subsequently, the Satanic imagery is toned down.
