Now Viewing: eminemTag type: Character Tag refers to images referencing the iconic American hip hop artist. In his early years, he was clean shaven with short blonde hair and pierced ears. During the 2010s, he switched to having short brown hair with facial hair. He was born as Marshall Bruce Mathers III on October 17, 1972 in Missouri, United States, and notably had an extremely difficult childhood, which would later influence his music. He had a highly tumultuous relationship with his mother Debbie Mathers, was abandoned by his father, and suffered bullying due to being one of the few Caucasian children in his community. He was always interested in telling stories and originally aspired to be a comic book artist until he heard his first rap song, Reckless from the soundtrack to the movie Breakin'. He became interested in rapping instead, starting at the age of 14. This is when he developed his stage name, initially going by M&M, a reference to both the candy and his initials, before changing to his current moniker. From the 1980s to the 1990s, he operated as an underground rapper, rapping with his childhood friends, most notably his best friend Proof. He released his first solo album Infinite in 1996, but it wasn't successful. However, Eminem started finding success when he developed his stage persona Slim Shady, an over the top dark side alter ego, which debuted in 1997 with the Slim Shady EP. This would attract the attention of rapper/producer Dr. Dre who worked with him to create his major breakthrough album, The Slim Shady LP in 1999. From that point on, Eminem became the most successful Caucasian rapper internationally, selling over 170 million records and consistently garnering praise from critics and fellow rappers. Much of his output is partly autobiographical with songs derived from his personal experience albeit somewhat fictionalized and often name-dropping people from his real life without altering their names. His songs often alternate between over the top and darkly comedic songs to serious and grim songs where he deals with his personal demons. Many of his songs, all written by himself, feature elaborate rhyming schemes. He has encountered controversy numerous times throughout his career from people who find his lyrics offensive or from fellow rappers who try to diss and discredit him. However, his career has managed to survive each controversy and he has often come out on top in his disputes with fellow rappers. Although he is willing to harshly criticize people in his songs, he is notably highly protective of his daughter Hailie. He almost never smiles on camera, wearing a serious expression at all times even when he's doing comedy. He is notable for popularizing the term stan, to refer to obsessive fans. The word is derived from one of his most iconic songs, Stan, and was the name of its protagonist who had an unhealthy obsession with Slim Shady.
