Now Viewing: etorofu_(kantai_collection)Tag type: Character 択捉 Etorofu (択捉), named after one of the Kurill islands (now called Iturup [1] by its Russian occupants), is the personification of the lead ship of the Etorofu-class coastal defense ships, as represented in the browser video_game Kantai_Collection. As a coastal defense ship, her class is even smaller than destroyers, and as such, she is portrayed as an "elementary school student" character, even younger than the generally "middle school" appearances of the destroyers. Etorofu has an energetic and forthright personality, similar to, but even more eager than Fubuki_(Kantai_Collection). Etorofu has red_hair in a bob_cut with braided sidelocks and thick_eyebrows. She has blue_eyes tsurime eyes. She wears a variation of an elementary school serafuku with long sleeves and prominent buttons, with a hat bearing a blue_ribbon, light blue neckerchief, white_gloves, blue pleated_skirt over bike_shorts, black socks (black_legwear), and mary_janes. On her right ankle, another blue ribbon is tied like an anklet, while on her left, an anchor on a chain forms another form of anklet. Her rigging (machinery) involves a pistol-like single-cannon turret held in her left hand. A mast and smokestack are carried on her back by straps like a backpack, while depth charge launchers are held like a purse from another strap. An anti-air gun is strapped to her right thigh, and more depth charges are strapped to her left. The historical IJN Etorofu was completed on the 25th of March, 1943 primarily to escort supply convoys. The Etorofu-class was developed specifically as an upgrade of the Shimushu_(Kantai_Collection)-class to give it greater anti-submarine capabilities as American submarine warfare inflicted significant losses upon Japanese shipping. Etorofu participated in multiple escort duties, including of the Hi-82 convoy in 1944, where the convoy suffered the loss of 3 tankers to US submarines. Etorofu survived the war and served as a repatriation vessel until being handed over to the US as spoils of war. The USN, in the process of drastically cutting its ship roster, soon scrapped Etorofu.
