Now Viewing: himura_kenshinTag type: Character The main character of Rurouni Kenshin. He is a red haired man with a distinct cross shaped scar on his face. He is a very polite and gentle man and often seems to be better at doing housework than his love interest Kamiya Kaoru. Despite his gentleness, he was the infamous Hitokiri Battousai who killed many people during the Bakumatsu period. However, he is not proud of his past and has renounced killing and only uses a reverse blade sword to defend himself without killing. Even with this handicap, he is still a formidable fighter. He was a wanderer prior to meeting Kaoru but has decided to settle down at the Kamiya dojo. Unfortunately for him, his past continues to haunt him and various other swordsmen of the Bakumatsu period are all too eager to pick a fight with him. He is inspired by the real life swordsman Kawakami Gensai who was said to be androgynously beautiful much like Kenshin is and was also known as a 'hitokiri.' Kenshin's age was notably a point of contention between Watsuki and his editors when Watsuki was planning Rurouni Kenshin. Kenshin is canonically 28 years old, but Watsuki originally planned for Kenshin to over 30. However, his editors said Kenshin was too old and that it would seem strange for a series written with a young male audience in mind to have such an old protagonist. Kenshin's canon age was a compromise between Watsuki and his editors; young enough to be acceptable as a shounen protagonist for the editors and old and experienced enough to fit Watsuki's characterization of him. Within the series, other characters often comment on how Kenshin looks younger than they imagine an experienced warrior like he is to be. He is famous for his distinctive speech patterns, he often ends sentence with de gozaru~. He also often makes the sound "Oro?" whenever he is caught by surprise during comedic moments. The final story arc of Rurouni Kenshin was conceived prior to the start of the series as Watsuki wanted to come up with an explanation for how Kenshin got his cross-shaped scar. He is voiced by stage/live action TV actress Suzukaze_Mayo in one of her few anime voice acting roles. Sato Takeru plays him in the live action movie. Sato was also Watsuki and his wife's first choice to be cast as Kenshin and the two were pleased when Sato ended up playing him. For the 2023 anime TV series, a male seiyuu was cast as Kenshin, Saitou_Souma. He also inspired the design of Baiken from Guilty Gear who looks like a genderswap of him. Supposedly, Ishiwatari Daisuke had thought Kenshin was a girl when watching Rurouni Kenshin.
