It was directed by Daichi Akitaro in a significant departure from his usual light-hearted comedies and dramas, and is the darkest of all of his anime work, dealing with heavy subject matter such as child exploitation and the horrors of warfare. It was written by Kurata Hideyuki. The soundtrack was composed by Iwasaki Taku in his first anime TV series soundtrack. It ran from October 19, 1999 to January 14, 2000. Matsutani Shuzo is a young and idealistic Kendo practitioner who lives in contemporary 1990s era Japan. One afternoon, as he's walking home from school, he notices a mysterious girl with light hair who seems completely different from anyone he's ever met. The girl's name is Lala Ru and Shu quickly befriends this strange girl. Soon, a portal opens up and soldiers emerge from it to capture Lala Ru. Shu does his best to protect Lala Ru, and enters the portal along with the soldiers. After he enters, he finds out that he has just entered a situation in which he is way over his head. He has been transported to the far future where Earth has been reduced to sandy wastelands and water is the greatest treasure of all. Terrorizing the hellish landscape is a large mechanical fortress lead by the insane King Hamdo who cruelly kidnaps and employs child soldiers taken from the lands he and his army have conquered. Hamdo wants Lala Ru in his grasp because she has the ability to control water. Shu himself is captured, tortured, and is forcibly prepped to join Hamdo's army. Shu's ideals are put to the ultimate test as he must figure out how to save Lala Ru, stop Hamdo, and bring some hope back to this barren Earth.
