It was part of Tezuka_Osamu's Animerama trilogy, which was a trilogy of adult-oriented anime films. This film is the only one not created by Tezuka, but it was created by his close associates, and is by far the darkest of the trilogy with this film having numerous sexual encounters, including non-consensual ones, and bloody violence. Tezuka was involved in pre-production but left early on to focus on his manga career. It was directed by Yamamoto Eiichi, who co-wrote the film along with Fukuda Yoshiyuki. The film was inspired by the non-fiction book La Socierie by Jules Michelet, which focused on witchcraft. The film's folk/rock score was composed by Satou Masahiko. The film tells the story of Jeanne, a beautiful peasant woman who has just married Jean. What looks to be a happy marriage is quickly soured once the local baron is informed of their marriage. Upon confirming that Jeanne is a virgin, he and his men lock Jean out of the castle and forcefully take Jeanne's first time. The two of them remain married, but this incident proves to be the first of many tragedies the two would be forced to endure. Shortly after her rape, Jeanne encounters a spirit that offers her a deal, it can grow as powerful as she wants it to and give her the power to solve her problems, but she must give it whatever it wants in exchange for its power. Jeanne does her best to live a peaceful life with Jean, but each tragedy she experiences causes her to slowly give in to the promises of power the spirit offers. . . The film has a surreal, psychedelic animation style that switches between the camera panning over still watercolor paintings to fluid and symbolism-heavy movements. The film was initially a flop at the box office, contributing to Mushi Productions going bankrupt and restructured, but after the film was restored in the 2000s-2010s, it has received critical reappraisal and praise.
