Now Viewing: kaze_no_tani_no_nausicaaTag type: Copyright 風の谷のナウシカ Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind An iconic post-apocalyptic fantasy adventure manga created by Miyazaki_Hayao. It ran from February 1982 to March 1994. It was adapted by Miyazaki himself as an anime film which is his first anime to be a completely original creation by him and the first Studio_Ghibli film. The manga and the film established many of the standard elements that would recur throughout Miyazaki and Ghibli's anime such as a female lead that takes an active role in solving the story's conflicts, an anti war and pro pacifistic message, an emphasis on harmony with nature, a soundtrack by Hisaishi Jou, and numerous flight sequences. The film is also the first time Miyazaki worked with Anno_Hideaki who was an animator on the film. The two of them would become life long friends. The movie was released on March 11, 1984. As the film was released early in the manga's run, it roughly covers the first few volumes of the manga and revises the plot to be more self contained. As such, the manga contains many plot points that are unique to it. It is also darker in tone than its adaptation with Miyazaki using it as a way to express his more serious thoughts in contrast to the more lighthearted films he directed while the manga was running. It is set in a post apocalyptic world that has been ravaged by what was known as the Seven Days of Fire, which destroyed industrial civilization. Humanity has been reduced to living in smaller kingdoms or villages and are faced with the constant threat of the Sea of Corruption. The Sea is actually a toxic forest which releases poisonous spores into the air. Furthermore, the sea is protected by giant bugs known as the Oumu who are accompanied by other giant insects. The Sea is growing bigger every day and it's very possible that humanity may eventually be wiped out by it. In spite of the danger the human race is already in, wars still break out between kingdoms. The story follows Nausicaa, a young girl who's the beloved princess of the Valley of the Wind. The valley is a small remote village where the people use wind to power their village. Its people even travel via aircraft with Nausicaa using a personal glider. Nausicaa is a peaceful girl who's unique in her ability to communicate and win the trust of animals, even the much feared Oumu. Nausicaa and her village are dragged into war when a plane, from the kingdom of Pejite carrying a mysterious cargo, crashes into the valley. One of its dying passengers instructs Nausicaa to destroy the cargo, but before Nausicaa and the village can get a chance to do so, the army of another kingdom, Torumekia, invades the Valley of the Wind, looking for the plane's cargo. In the ensuing battle, Nausicaa's father, who was previously the chief of the village, is killed, and Nausicaa must step up as the new leader. As humanity becomes embroiled in what may turn into another catastrophic event, Nausicaa must find a way to stop the bloodshed while keeping true to her ideals. The manga and the film were both major successes. The original manga sold more than 17 million copies by 2020 and received Japan Cartoonists Association Award Grand Prize in 1994. The film was also both critically and financially successful, frequently placing in top animated film lists compiled by magazines, and earning 1.48 billion yen at the Japanese box office and 1.72 billion yen in overseas markets. The film has been dubbed into English twice. The first was a dub that was released on June 13, 1985, that retitled the film to Warriors of the Wind, and made numerous changes that Miyazaki disliked to the point that it soured him on English localizations for a while. Miyazaki would go on to insist that future English localizations hew close to his original intent by mandating that no scenes are removed. The second dub was produced by Disney on February 22, 2005, and is a more faithful translation of the original.
