Now Viewing: kill_billTag type: Copyright Tag refers to the duology of American martial arts action/drama films written and directed by Quentin Tarantino and starring Uma Thurman. The first film was released on October 11, 2003. The duology was originally intended to be one film, but Miramax Films chief Harvey Weinstein suggested that Tarantino split the movie into two films, which Tarantino agreed to do. However, a cut that combines both films into one was released a decade later. Like The Matrix, the series is heavily influenced by both Hong Kong and Japanese pop culture, and Tarantino pays homage to both in the films. The films ultra-violent fight scenes are staged like Hong Kong martial arts movies and were choreographed by famed Hong Kong fight choreographer Yuen Woo Ping. The films' plot was inspired by the 1972 manga Shurayuki-hime, particularly the 1973 film adaptation. Despite being primarily a live action film, the first film even includes an extended anime sequence that was handled by Production_I.G. and directed by Nakazawa Kazuto. The Bride, real name Beatrix Kiddo, is a deadly female assassin who was part of the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad, but she decides to leave that life behind after she gets pregnant, assumes a new name and prepares to get married and live a normal life. Unfortunately, the father of her baby, Bill, and her fellow assassins, crash her wedding and massacre everyone. Even Bride telling Bill that she's carrying his baby does not prevent him from shooting her in the head. But Beatrix doesn't die and instead falls into a coma for four years, in which she continues to suffer. Her comatose body is prostituted by a sleazy orderly named Buck to various men. When Beatrix finally wakes up, she discovers that her baby has apparently died. Filled with a thirst for vengeance, Beatrix first offs Buck, and prepares to enact her vengeance on her former comrades, taking out each member of the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad one by one until she finally gets to kill Bill. The basic concept behind the film was conceived when Tarantino was working on Pulp Fiction. He and Thurman came up with the protagonist's name. The series is much more action-oriented in comparison to Tarantino's other work, although the extended conversations that Tarantino is famous for are still present. The story is told in anachronic order like his past work. The films are also exceptionally gory even by his standards, to the point that the American release of the first film slightly censors one fight scene by showing it in black and white. The Japanese release of the film shows the battle unaltered. The series was highly successful critically and financially, and has often been homaged and parodied by other works. It revived both star Uma Thurman and David Carradine's acting careers.
