The film returns to the grittier tone established by the first two films. It is a post apocalyptic action film/western-on-wheels directed by series creator George Miller and written by Miller, Brendan McCarthy, and Nico Lathouris. The film stars Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult, and Hugh Keays Byrne. This film is notably the first action film Miller has made since Beyond Thunderdome and the first adult-oriented movie he's made, since The Witches of Eastwick in 1987, after two decades of working on more family friendly movies. The soundtrack is composed by JunkieXL. The film has received prequel comics that elaborate on the backstories of the main characters.

Max, haunted by the demise of everyone he couldn't save, wanders the wasteland alone, focusing entirely on his own survival. One day he is captured by an army of pale-skinned road warriors called the War Boys and taken to their charismatic but tyrannical leader, Immortan Joe. Once they are at Joe's Citadel, they discover that Max is a universal blood donor and use him to give blood to a sickly War Boy named Nux. Joe has created a society where he and his sons are at the top. Able-bodied men are recruited into the War Boy army and indoctrinated with a Viking-esque ideology that a glorious death in battle will bring them to Valhalla where Joe will continue to lead them. The women are used to provide milk and sustenance and any woman that Joe finds appealing will become his wife who he then uses for breeding and to give birth to a son.

One day, Imperator Furiosa, a trusted lieutenant of Joe's and the only woman in the War Boy army, suddenly betrays Joe by taking his wives away in a giant tanker truck called the War Rig. Furiosa intends to take the women back to her old home, the Green Place, where they will lead better lives. Once Joe figures out what Furiosa is up to, he gathers his entire army and immediately pursues Furiosa. Max is dragged into this conflict due to Nux's desire to participate in capturing Furiosa and reclaiming Joe's wives. After a big chase, Max and Nux are separated from the rest of the army. Max encounters Furiosa and, still focused on survival, tries to get away on the War Rig, but soon realizes that the only chance he has to get out alive is to work with Furiosa on her mission to escort the wives to safety.

The film notably went through a very long development period. Miller came up with the basic premise during the 1990s and if production had went smoothly, Mel Gibson would've reprised his role as Max, but the film kept getting delayed due to outside circumstances and Gibson eventually lost interest in the role. Miller was also concerned about the real-life controversies that Gibson was embroiled with at the time and wanted Max to stay a relatively youthful character so Hardy was chosen to take over as Max. Miller at one point even considered making the movie an animation, but he ultimately settled on making it a live action film with some 3D effects. It would not be until 2012 that Miller would finally get a chance to start filming and the film was completed in 2015. The film was originally intended to be filmed in Australia like past films, but the area where the filmmakers wanted to film, was hit with considerable rainfall and no longer looked like a desert wasteland. The filmmakers ended up filming in Namibia, Africa.

Although made in an era where CG is commonplace in movies, Miller intentionally used practical effects for most of the movie to the point that 90% of the effects in the movie are practical. The CG was primarily used to enhance the environments, making them appear bigger than they were in real life as well as erase the safety harnesses and wires that the actors and stuntmen wore while performing the action scenes. The stuntmen also included circus performers such as Cirque du Soleil performers and Olympic athletes. The film also used digital manipulation to give the film a blue and fiery orange color palette.

Unlike most films, the film originated as a collection of storyboards as opposed to a traditional screenplay. Due to the long production time, some of the artwork dates back to the 1990s. Miller worked closely with comic artist Brendan McCarthy in creating the world seen in the film. Miller strongly emphasized visual storytelling, quoting Alfred Hitchcock, in that he wanted the film to be understood in Japan without subtitles.

The film notably has a stronger female presence in the cast than past Mad Max films with female characters making up a good chunk of the film's cast as well featuring a female lead character in Imperator Furiosa. Miller even had his wife Margaret Sixel edit the film. Writer and feminist activist Eve Ensler was brought in as an adviser for the actresses playing the Wives.

The film also escalates the car chase action the franchise is famous for to the point that most of the film is one long chase sequence. The actors also described the filming process as spending 138 days in Namibia shooting one scene.

The film received virtually universal positive reviews from professional critics and is one of the highest rated movies on Rotten Tomatoes, with a score of 98%, also making this film the most widely praised installment of the Mad Max franchise besides Mad Max 2. The film grossed 375.8 million dollars worldwide. This film is also one of the critically acclaimed science fiction action movies to date. Among the many awards it's won, it won the award for Best Film of 2015 from Fédération Internationale de la Presse Cinématographique (FIPRESCI). It has also been nominated for 11 Academy Awards and won 6 (Editing, Costume Design, Production Design, Makeup and Hairstyling, Sound Mixing, and Sound Editing), which is an exceedingly rare occurrence for a film of its genre.

The film has also received tie-in comics that further explore the characters' backstories as well as establish stronger links with previous Mad Max films. The 2015 Mad Max game developed by Avalanche Studios is a prequel to this film. Miller later made a feature film prequel to this film titled Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, which tells Furiosa's origin story.
