She is based off of the real life Maria Augusta Von Trapp nee Kutschera (January 26, 1905 - March 28, 1987) who wrote the memoir The Story of the Trapp Family Singers that the anime is based off of. The real Maria never got to see the anime, but she was familiar with the most iconic adaptation of her life, The Sound of Music. The anime follows the general path of her early life as recorded in the memoirs, but some elements were fictionalized, such as the time frame being moved from the 1920s to the 1930s. Anime Maria was also made slightly younger than she actually was when she met the Von Trapp family. In the anime, she is an orphan who moves to Salzburg intending to become a nun and devote herself to God. She joins Nonnberg Abbey to start her training, but after some time there, she is asked to act as the governess for the Von Trapp family, a job that she accepts. Maria is an optimistic, playful, and compassionate young woman who's behavior is often at odds with more strict and traditionally minded people such as her fellow nuns at Nonnberg Abbey and Frau Matilda at the Von Trapp family household. However, she is very skilled at handling children, all of whom quickly come to adore her, a fact that even her stanchest critics are forced to acknowledge. She acts as a teacher to the children under her care and heavily incorporates songs into her lessons, getting the children to sing with her as she strums her guitar. In the Von Trapp household, she is officially assigned to teach the similarly named Maria Von Trapp who's frail body prevents her from going to school, but Maria, on her own volition, ends up helping out and bonding with the other Von Trapp children to the point that she steadily becomes the second mother figure in their lives. Georg von Trapp, the Von Trapp patriarch, recognizes the positive influence Maria's arrival has had on his family and he finds himself falling for her as well. She is voiced by Katsuki_Matsuko.
