Prequel to the Metal Gear series and is chronologically the first game in the series. It was released on November 17, 2004 and stars Naked Snake as opposed to series hero Solid Snake. It is directed by Hideo_Kojima, who originally intended this to be his last Metal Gear game as director. The story was written by Kojima, Fukushima Tomokazu, and Murata Shuyo. Music is composed by Harry Gregson Williams and Hibino Nobuhiko.

It is set in the 1960s, in the middle of the Cold War. Naked Snake is sent by the US government to rescue a scientist named Nikolai Sokolov and sabotage the production of a weapon known as the Shagohod. However, the mission goes awry when Naked Snake's beloved mentor, The Boss, suddenly defects to the Soviets and throws Snake off of a bridge. The Boss also gives the sadistic Colonel Volgin two Davy Crockett nuclear shells. Once Colonel Volgin gets his hands on the shells he immediately detonates one of the shells in order to cover up the Boss's theft. This has major international consequences: as the nuke was detonated on Soviet territory, the Soviet Union considers it to be an attack by the United States and the Cold War is at risk of turning hot. The Boss is branded as a traitor to the United States and Naked Snake is sent on a new mission: infiltrate Volgin's hideout, destroy the Shagohod, and eliminate The Boss and her crew of super powered soldiers (the Cobra Unit).

It is notable for most of the action taking place in the jungle as opposed to the more enclosed indoor environments in previous games. As such, there is a greater focus on survival along with the standard infiltration gameplay. Snake will have to eat animals and take the time to heal himself if he is wounded or risk hampering his combat ability.

Like the previous Metal Gear game, it is possible and even encouraged to do a no killing run in the game. The amount of people the player kills even plays a role in one of the game's boss fights. There is only one enemy in the game that has to be killed.

Since the game is a prequel, it gets a unique game over screen that says time paradox, which also activates if the player kills a character who canonically appears in Metal Gear games set after this game. The game was a critical and financial success and sold 3.6 million copies internationally by 2005. The game became the start of the Big Boss prequel saga in the Metal Gear franchise, showing how he descended from a well-meaning hero to the villain he is in the first two Metal Gear games

There is a special Saru Getchu inspired mini game in the game involving Snake trying to catch a monkey.

It has received a remake for the 3DS.

This installment of the franchise is notably influenced by the James Bond franchise, which is also directly referenced within the game's dialogue. It also features a James Bond-esque opening titles set to the also James-Bond-esque theme song Snake Eater. This game's ending theme is notably not an original composition by Konami's composers, but a licensed song by the band Starsailor, "Way to Fall." The song choice was a sort of lucky mistake on Kojima's part. Kojima planned on using David Bowie's "Space Oddity" and "Ashes to Ashes" to reflect the theme of space development, but the game's story ended up not matching said theme and Kojima decided not to use said songs. One of Kojima's colleagues suggested he listen to the band stellastarr, which Kojima misheard as Starsailor. He looked up Starsailor and liked the song Way to Fall, which ended up being used in the game.

Kojima's own game development studio, Kojima Productions, was founded after this game was released. It reuses the Fox Unit Emblem, first seen in this game, as its logo.
