It is a 2010 stealth game released for the Playstation Portable. It is written and directed by Hideo_Kojima. Shinkawa_Yoji does the character designs.

The game makes a lot of references to Metal Gear Solid 3 and that game's outcome is important to this game's story. If you have yet to play Metal Gear Solid 3 and wish to avoid being spoiled, you should probably play that game first.

It is 1974 and Big Boss is now leading an army he created called Militaires San Frontieres. A representative of the Costa Rican government approaches him, soliciting his services. Costa Rica has no army and the government wants Big Boss to help stop an armed force occupying the region. The armed force is suspected to be the CIA. Big Boss accepts the job and heads to Costa Rica to investigate. He and his army are assisted by a pacifist Costa Rican teen girl named Paz Ortega Andrade who tells Big Boss that she had escaped from being tortured. As Big Boss investigates and gathers more troops, he learns that the Costa Rican government's suspicions of the CIA occupying the region turn out to be correct. He also uncovers a new nuclear threat involving a new mecha called the Peace Walker as well as the truth behind The Boss's mission in Snake Eater.

Gameplay is similar to Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops combining stealth and managing an army. Not only can Big Boss choose to avoid killing enemies, but he can also include them into his army. The game also supports co-op multiplayer and players can now work together to tackle missions. There are weapons that are designed to be used by more than one person like the human slingshot.

The game also features a higher quantity of man versus vehicle battles than previous Metal Gear games as opposed to the protagonist taking on super powered human opponents. Tanks, helicopters, and mecha frequently act as the bosses of the game. Vehicles can even be captured and used by the player's army.

The game is notably the longest of the all of the Metal Gear games despite being on a handheld machine. The game also handles cutscenes differently from the console entries of the series. Instead of movie like scenes, the story is told in a comic book-esque format with limited animation but more stylized character designs.

The game is more toned down in violence compared to the other 3d Metal Gear games and there is less bloodshed. However, the game features more sexual innuendo and implications.

The game also crosses over with Monster Hunter and there are even special missions where Big Boss and his army take on the Monster Hunter monsters.

The mechs' AI voices are created using the Vocaloid program. However, the Vocaloid characters do not appear in the game.
