The series' full title is Seihou Bukyou Outlaw Star, which translates to Starward Warrior Knight Outlaw Star. The series is a spinoff of the Itou's earlier manga, Uchuu Eiyuu Monogatari, but is a stand-alone story that happens to be set in the same universe. The manga ran from September 20, 1996 to May 20, 1999. It was adapted into an anime TV series that ran from January 8, 1998 to June 25, 1998. The TV series was preceded by a short anime pilot/preview released in 1996 that features some different artwork and designs. It is directed by Hongo Mitsuru. Music is composed by Ohtani Kow. The characters were designed by Saito_Takuya. The mechs were designed by Ishigaki Junya and Kawamori_Shoji. Gene Starwind is a 20 year old small time bounty hunter who works with the eleven year old Jim Hawking on the planet Sentinel III. During jobs, the former does the majority of the combat while the latter specializes in mechanics. Gene is a formidable fighter skilled at hand to hand and gunslinging. He is in possession of a special powerful gun called a Caster gun which uses rare Caster shells to fire powerful blasts of energy, useful when fighting against more powerful enemies. Gene spends most of his days womanizing and doing odd jobs. Despite Gene's general toughness, he is a 'space virgin.' While he has actually been to space, he is afraid of space travel due a traumatic experience he had when he was a teen; he lost his father during an attack by space pirates and Gene only survived thanks to his father's efforts. The small time bounty hunters become involved in a much larger conflict once they accept a bodyguard assignment from a blonde woman named Rachel Sweet. Gene and Jim quickly discover that 'Rachel' is really famous bounty hunter Hot Ice Hilda in disguise; Hilda is on the run from the Kei Pirates after she acquired a box containing the mysterious android girl Melfina. Gene finds himself having to return to space to avoid the Kei Pirates. Hilda introduces Gene to a highly advanced spaceship called XGP15A-II, which is supposed to be able to locate the legendary Galactic Leyline. The Leyline is said to be a place of great treasure, knowledge, and power. Melfina remembers nothing about her past, but she is able to help power this spaceship and various factions are out to capture her to use her for their own purposes. Gene quickly becomes the captain of this new ship and is inspired by Hilda to dub it Outlaw Star. Gene and Jim become the caretakers of Melfina and they travel across the galaxy to complete bounty hunter jobs and find the Galactic Leyline. Itou created Outlaw Star to be distinct from his earlier manga set in the same universe, Uchuu Eiyuu Monogatari. Uchuu Eiyuu was, in his words, something out of a boy's dream. Outlaw Star was intended to be a more adult story. Unlike its predecessor, Outlaw Star stars an adult and comparatively more experienced protagonist who is also shown to have sexual relations with multiple women. This series' universe combines East and West, mixing a space western with elements taken from Chinese and Japanese culture. Keeping with the western theme, the anime often accompanies scene changes with a gunshot sound. Each episode also begins with a short narration about one of the characters accompanies with still images of said character. This series, particularly the anime adaptation, is notably very popular in North America to the point that the North American division of Bandai Entertainment listed it as one of its five most successful anime properties. However, the series underperformed in Japan, which is one of the reasons why a sequel series, which was planned at one point, was never made. The other reason is because director Hongo was too busy with other projects. Outlaw Star, however, did spawn a spinoff titled Angel Links as well as some light novel stories. When the series was broadcast on North America's Cartoon Network, the series received quite a few edits toning down the nudity. The most fanservice heavy episode, episode 23, was removed entirely. However, an unedited version of the series was eventually released.
