The series originated as a novel written by Sena Hideaki, which has also been adapted into a live action movie. However, the game series is far more well known. The original PS1 1998 game is actually a sequel to the book. The series centers on New York City cop Aya Brea, who is granted special powers after an encounter with mitochondria Eve, and her battles against various monsters mutated by sentient mitochondria. The series blends elements of the survival horror games popular at the time with JRPG elements. Aya is the only playable character throughout the series as opposed to having a group of people like most JRPGs. Aya uses a mixture of guns and the special powers she gained from her encounter with Eve. The original game was also a demo for the graphics engine that would be used for Final Fantasy VIII, but managed to become popular enough to spawn two sequels. It also featured a techno-opera soundtrack composed by Shimomura Yoko.
