Now Viewing: pulp_fictionTag type: Copyright An iconic 1994 darkly comedic American crime film. It was written and directed by Quentin Tarantino and starred an ensemble cast including John_Travolta, Samuel_L_Jackson, Bruce_Willis, and Uma_Thurman. The film is known for its at the time unique narrative structure. The film's story is not only told out of order, but is also really a collection of multiple story arcs with different protagonists and antagonists. The film will even stop in the middle of a story arc and jump to another one only to later return to the unfinished arc. However, the story arcs are connected to each other and major characters of one arc will often appear in another. Due to this narrative style, the film does not have a clear protagonist. Like the rest of Tarantino's films, the film is filled with homages to pop culture that Tarantino has an interest in and also does not have an original soundtrack. Rather, the soundtrack is a compilation of surf rock and soul music. Like his other films, the film is dialogue heavy, punctuated with quick outbursts of brutal violence. Even though most of the cast are ruthless criminals, they are shown to have extended discussions about various non-crime related topics. The film's style was highly influential on subsequent crime films and the film's profanity and pop cultural reference heavy dialogue, written by Tarantino and Roger Avary, is frequently quoted. The film was also awarded multiple awards for its script. The film also won the Palme D'or at the Cannes Film Festival and Best Film and Director awards at the National Society of Film Critics. The film's critical and financial success revived John Travolta's then flagging career and made a major star out of Samuel L. Jackson. The film is also credited with starting the trend of bigger name actors deliberately taking pay cuts in order to appear in and support lower profile movies that interest them, which is what Bruce Willis did so that he can be in the movie. The film is also set in the same universe as Tarantino's previous film Reservoir Dogs due to Vincent Vega being confirmed as being the brother of one of the major characters from Dogs, Mr. Blonde.
