The band had its origins in 1968 as a group called Smile which consisted of guitarist Brian May, drummer Roger Taylor, and bassist Tim Staffell. While at Ealing Art College, Staffell met Freddie Mercury, who became interested in the group and joined the group himself while Staffell left to join another band named Humpy Bong. With Mercury as the lead singer, the band was renamed Queen, and debuted on July 1970. The band went through multiple bassists before finally settling on John Deacon who joined on February 1971. The band continued with this lineup up until Mercury's untimely passing due to AIDs in 1991. After the tragic loss, Deacon lost interest in performing and retired in 1997 with May and Taylor continuing to perform and hold concerts with a variety of artists as lead singers. Although they are known as a rock band, they have written songs that delved into genres such as disco and opera, often by combining said genres with rock. The band is known for their frequent vocal harmonies and multi-tracking voices, which makes their songs sound like they're performed by a much larger group of people than they actually were. The band was one of the most successful bands in the world during the 1970s-1980s, with many of their songs and concert performances becoming iconic and widely homaged/parodied. They sold a total of 150 million - 300 million records and received the Outstanding Contribution to British Music Award from the British Phonographic Industry in 1990 and were inducted into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001. Their songs, "We Will Rock You," and "We are the Champions" have become mainstays at sporting events and are almost always played together and many of their other songs frequently appear in movies. They were a large influence on hard rock and heavy metal musicians such as Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Radiohead, etc.. They have also inspired a 2002 musical called "We Will Rock You" which uses their songs as the soundtrack. Their music was also used for the 1998 video game, Queen: The Eye.
