It was released on January 9, 1992, and was written and directed by Quentin Tarantino, and was his major breakthrough as a director. It stars an ensemble cast which includes Tim Roth, Harvey Keitel, Steve Buscemi, and Michael Madsen. It tells the story of a group of jewel thieves who meet up to perform a heist. Outside of the father-son duo of Joe and Eddie Cabot, all of the men go by aliases instead of their real names. When the time comes to perform the robbery, things go horribly wrong, leading to the deaths of some of the men and one man suffering a serious gunshot wound. The surviving thieves retreat to their hideout to figure out what to do next, and it becomes clear that one of the reasons the heist failed is because one thief is actually a mole. The relationship between the survivors becomes increasingly tense as they try to find out who the mole is. . . The film established many of Tarantino's trademarks: usage of music that Tarantino likes instead of an original score, a heavily dialogue driven narrative with quick outbursts of brutal violence, an anachronic story structure, and many homages to other movies. The film received generally positive critical reviews upon release and grossed 2.8 million dollars at the box office. However, the film's stature grew over time and it became one of the most popular independent films of the 1990s. It was adapted into a video game in 2006 for the PC, Xbox, and Playstation 2, which doesn't use any of the actors' likenesses except for Madsen's.
