The soundtrack was composed by Hirasawa_Susumu, the first collaboration between the two. Hirasawa went on to become Kon's composer of choice for his anime. It premiered on July 18, 2001. The story begins in the 2000s Japan, the prestigious film studio Ginei Studios, responsible for many classic films, has just gone bankrupt. This inspires TV interviewer Tachibana Genya and his cameraman Ida Kyoji to seek out the studio's elusive biggest movie star, Fujiwara Chiyoko, who Genya is a big fan of. Chiyoko agrees to the interview and, upon Tachibana returning a special key to her, proceeds to tell him the story of her lifelong quest to reunite with the man the key belongs to. The film is structured as a biopic of its fictional protagonist, Chiyoko, but like Kon's previous film, Perfect Blue, blurs the line between reality and fiction. In the case of this movie, although there's no real time travel, the past and the present are heavily intertwined with the present day characters appearing in the same sequences as past Chiyoko, visualizing what she went through or acting as stand-ins for other characters. Scenes from Chiyoko's movies are also constructed in such a way that they mirror Chiyoko's personal life and present state of mind. This film is notable for being the last completely hand drawn cel-animated theatrical anime film. The film was very well-received critically, winning the Grand Prize in the Japan Agency of Cultural Affairs Media Arts Festival, the awards for Best Animation Film and Fantasia Ground-Breaker at the 2001 Fantasia Film Festival, the Feature Film Award at the 8th Animation Kobe, Ofuji Noburo Award at the 2002 Mainichi Film Awards, and the Orient Express Award at the 2001 Festival de Cine de Sitges.
