Despite the title, the series is a humorous homage to older first person shooter games like Doom. The games' lengthy levels feature a lot of wide open spaces where large scale battles will be set. The game's protagonist Sam will be swarmed by hundreds of enemies where he will have to take most of them out in order to survive. In the history of the game's universe, an alien overlord named Mental had battled an alien race named Syrians with planet Earth caught in the middle. The Syrians left behind artifacts and technology for humanity to discover. In the 22nd century, Mental and his forces return to wreak havoc on Earth. Sam 'Serious' Stone is a wisecracking gunslinger who is humanity's last hope after the mysterious alien overlord Mental wiped out virtually the entire human population. Sam travels back through time to undo the damage Mental has done and rediscover the Syrian artifacts.
