It was released in 2008 for PlayStation 3 and XBOX 360 and is a 3D weapons based fighting game with ring-outs. Character customization returns from its predecessor. The game was the first in the series to feature online capabilities and introduced an unblockable instant kill cinematic attack called a Critical Finish, in order to prevent excessive blocking. A Soul gauge meter is located next to the standard health bar. The bar's color changes as the player or their opponent blocks attacks. The meter regenerates when the player hits his/her opponent and if the player causes his/her opponent's gauge to be emptied, the player hits the opponent with an attack that destroys part of his/her opponent's clothes and briefly stun him/her and potentially setting up for an instant kill move known as the Critical Finish. Due to the addition of clothing damage, it is possible for a fight to end with an opponent or even both fighters in their underwear (no nudity though). This, combined with more revealing default outfits for most of the female characters, has made Soul Calibur IV the Soul Calibur game with the most fanservice. The game also featured Star Wars guest characters: Starkiller, Darth Vader, and Yoda. It also featured characters designed by various anime/manga artists that used a fighting style as one of the regular Soul Calibur characters. These characters include: Angol Fear, Ashlotte, Kamikirimusi, Scheherazade, and Shura. The game introduced Hilde and Algol to the Soul Calibur universe.
