(天空の城ラピュタ)

Also known as Laputa: Castle in the Sky or just Castle in the Sky. It is a 1986 fantasy action adventure anime film written and directed by Miyazaki_Hayao and is Studio_Ghibli's film debut. It was released on August 2, 1986. The soundtrack, like much of Miyazaki's films, is composed by Joe Hisaishi. The film's title, and the eponymous castle that the story centers around, is taken from the satirical Jonathan Swift adventure story Gulliver's Travels, which is explicitly acknowledged in the film itself.

Sheeta is a young girl who has been abducted from her village by an army and government agents led by Muska. The power-hungry men want her for the special stone pendant she wears around her neck and which has been passed down her family through many generations. Said pendant is said to be able to lead people to the mythical lost castle in the sky, Laputa. Sheeta has no desire to help Muska and his men, and when a group of air pirates led by Captain Dola who is also looking for the pendant, attack Muska's airship, Sheeta takes the opportunity to escape. Unfortunately, her escape goes awry and she falls off the airship, apparently to her doom. However, the pendant suddenly activates, slowing down her fall and saving her life.

Pazu, a young boy who lives and works in working class mining town, sees the unconscious Sheeta floating towards the ground and catches her and lets her stay in his home. Upon waking up, Sheeta quickly forms a close bond with Pazu, but the two children have little time to rest for Captain Dola and Muska are still after the pendant and they arrive in Pazu's town, searching for it. Pazu, out of a desire to see Laputa for himself and prove that his father, who briefly glimpsed it, was not a liar, as well as a genuine desire to help his newfound friend/love interest agrees to help Sheeta escape. The two of them go on the run from the army and pirates, embarking on a journey that will lead to them discovering the secrets of Laputa itself. . .

The film's setting is inspired by Wales. In 1984, Miyazaki visited Wales and witnessed the miners' strike. He was impressed and inspired by the unity and courage he saw amongst the miners and he used that experience as inspiration when he returned to Japan in 1986 to make this movie.

The film notably has two English dubs. One 1989 dub that was only shown on Japan Air Lines Flights, and a 2003 dub handled by Walt Disney. The second dub notably features a new soundtrack, also by Hisaishi, and also makes a few changes to the film's script, mostly adding new dialogue. Although Miyazaki approved of the changes, they were still met with controversy, and for the DVD release, Disney decided to remove the added dialogue.

This movie also has the distinct honor of the being the subject of the most popular Tweet in Twitter's history. On August 23, 2013, fans watching the movie tweeted the word "Balse" the exact moment it was spoken in the film. There was a global peak of 143,199 tweets within 1 second.

The anime Fushigi no Umi no Nadia has some stylistic similarities to this movie because both works were borne out of a concept conceived by Miyazaki himself: an adventure TV series starring two orphan children based off of Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Miyazaki himself never made said series, but he used some of his ideas for this movie and his earlier anime series Future Boy Conan.

The film was critically acclaimed upon release, receiving numerous awards, such as Best Anime at the 9th Anime Grand Prix, something that would become a recurring trend for Studio Ghibli's films.
