It has been 10 years since Sarah Connor narrowly survived Skynet's attempt on her life. Burdened with the knowledge that humanity will eventually be at war with machines, Sarah has spent the past decade preparing for the upcoming war and to figure out some way to prevent it. However, her attempts to do so have severely damaged her personal life. Her relationship with her son and future leader of humanity, John Connor, has become severely strained. She is also seen as an insane woman and is kept within a mental hospital. John lives with foster parents who he doesn't care for and has become a juvenile delinquent, using his talents to steal money. Skynet once again attempts to get rid of John. This time, it sends the T-1000, an advanced liquid-metal cyborg that is even better at blending in and assassination than the T-800. To combat this even more dangerous foe, John sends a reprogrammed T-800, which looks exactly like the one that almost killed Sarah, that humanity has managed to get ahold of to be his younger self's bodyguard. After the T-800 informs him of his mission, John decides to free his mother from the mental hospital with the T-800's help. After Sarah is freed, the trio must both protect John from the T-1000 and figure out a way to stop Judgement Day, the day Skynet triggers a nuclear war that wipes out most of humanity and sets the stage for its takeover. The T-800 also forms a sort of father-son relationship with the young and troubled John and the cyborg designed to be an efficient killer begins to learn what it means to be human from the future leader of humanity. Although John has always been an important character in the series mythos, this film is the first time he is shown onscreen. There are two different versions of the film, the original theatrical release, and an extended cut that restores scenes that were cut from the theatrical version. At the time of the film's release, it was the most expensive film ever made, at a budget of 94-102 million dollars. The film was highly successful and had a significantly better box office performance than the original film. The film is often considered to be one of the few film sequels to be comparable to the original in quality and is the most commonly parodied and homaged installment in the franchise. The film is often referenced and parodied. The film's poster, depicting the T-800 sitting on a motorbike while wielding a shotgun and dressed in a biker outfit, and the film's ending are often parodied. It also added another iconic quote to Arnold's repertoire of famous lines, "Hasta la vista, Baby." While the film still predominantly uses practical effects, the film is notable for popularizing the use of computer graphics in movies. CGI was used to convey the T1000's transformations. The CG effects alone cost 5 million dollars. However, this film's success has also led to it overshadowing the rest of the franchise. The film notably became a branching off point in the Terminator franchise. Subsequent sequels treated this and the first movie as canon, but most of these sequels were widely considered to be inferior to this film and the first, which led to filmmakers constantly semi-rebooting the series, erasing all entries from canon except the first two and creating different timelines.
