The film is directed by Christopher Nolan, and is written by Nolan and his younger brother Jonathan Nolan. The story was conceived by David S. Goyer and Christopher Nolan. It stars Christian Bale, Heath Ledger and Aaron Eckhart. The actors from Batman Begins reprise their roles except Katie Holmes, who is replaced by Maggie Gyllenhaal, as Rachel Dawes. The soundtrack was composed by Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard. This film is notably the first Batman film without Batman's name in the title although the title still refers to him. Bale said that this was done to signify how this take on Batman was different from previous ones. It was released on July 14, 2008. Thanks to Batman's heroic efforts, crime in Gotham City is steadily decreasing. Batman is not alone in heroically fighting crime; a rising and increasingly popular attorney named Harvey Dent has managed to greatly reduce the numbers of criminals through legal means as opposed to Batman's vigilanteism. Batman admires and respects Harvey even though his love interest Rachel is currently dating him. Gotham is steadily becoming a better place. Unfortunately, a mysterious scarred man in clown make up and a purple suit suddenly emerges in Gotham and begins wreaking havoc. He dubs himself the Joker and approaches Gotham's mafia leaders, offering to help deal with Batman. The mafia leaders are suspicious of him, but they soon prove unable to stop him as The Joker begins an escalating series of campaigns to drive Gotham into total chaos. Batman, Harvey, and Jim Gordon team up to stop the madman, but his intelligence as well as his erratic and unpredictable behavior makes him difficult to stop. Things get much worse for the heroes and Gotham in general once The Joker manages to strike somewhere very close to home for Batman and Harvey. . . The movie follows the more realistic approach to the Batman mythos established by Batman Begins but goes much further in terms of darkness. However, the film is also careful to avoid explicit bloodshed except for Harvey's burnt face in spite of The Joker's sadistic and brutal ways of dispatching people who get in his way. The film takes inspiration from the first issue of the Batman comic, The Long Halloween, and The Killing Joke. Outside of the Batman comics, the film also takes inspiration from the 1995 crime drama/thriller Heat, in its portrayal of Gotham. The film has the distinction of being one of the most critically acclaimed superhero movies and the most critically acclaimed entry in Nolan's take on Batman. It won the Academy Award for Best Sound Editing. Heath Ledger's portrayal of The Joker, despite initial skepticism towards Ledger's casting, was especially praised and earned him an Academy Award of Best Supporting Actor. Sadly, The Dark Knight was the last movie he completed while still alive and his award was earned posthumously. The film was also a box office success, earning 1 billion dollars by February 2009.
