It is a 3d animated fantasy action comedy film animated by Illumination. It is directed by Aaron Horvath and Micheal Jelenic, both of whom previously worked on Teen Titans Go! The film is written by Matthew Fogel. This adaptation is notable for having greater creative involvement from Nintendo themselves. Franchise creator Miyamoto_Shigeru acts as the producer and consultant for the film. The score is composed by Brian Tyler who remixed many of the songs from the franchise's history and the iconic leitmotifs composed by Kondo Koji. Although this film still takes some creative liberties with its source, it is considerably more faithful to the main franchise in its story, aesthetics, and tone than previous adaptations. The film stars a multitude of A-list Hollywood live action actors as the voices of the characters such as Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, and Anya Taylor Joy as Princess Peach. The voice actor most associated with Mario, Charles Martinet, has multiple supporting roles in the film even if he isn't playing his signature character. It was released on April 5, 2023. This adaptation brings back the concept of Mario and Luigi being from outside the Mushroom Kingdom, and acts as an origin story of how the plumbers came to the kingdom. Mario and Luigi are two down on their luck plumbers working in Brooklyn. Mario has just made the decision to leave his previous employment, with his loyal younger brother Luigi following. Their father disapproves and the brothers had just blown their hard-earned money on a poorly conceived advertisement for their business. However, the brothers learn of a major manhole leak on the news and seize the opportunity for their next job. While on the job, they happen upon a Warp Pipe that transports them from Brooklyn to the Mushroom Kingdom, a fantastical world with geography and architecture built around the platforming mechanics from the video games. In this adaptation, the brothers are new to platforming in spite of their athleticism, and Mario is caught off guard by the Mushroom Kingdom's environment. To make matters worse, he has been separated from Luigi who is captured by King Bowser, the tyrannical king of the Koopas who aims to marry Princess Peach and conquer the Mushroom Kingdom. Mario must now train to survive in this new world, rescue his brother, and protect the Mushroom Kingdom from Bowser's ambitions. The film received mixed reviews from professional critics, but was much more warmly received financially than the previous theatrical Mario film with the film grossing 93 million dollars internationally upon its debut.
