Now Viewing: battletoadsTag type: Copyright A 1990s 2D British beat-em-up/platformer video game franchise created by Chris and Tim Stamper of Rareware, the creators of the later and much more successful platformer series Donkey Kong Country. The franchise follows a group of tough anthropomorphic toads named after skin conditions: Rash, Zitz, and Pimple, in their battles against the human Dark Queen. The franchise was inspired by the success of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles multimedia franchise and was created as a rival series with the intent of also becoming a multimedia success. The original game was released on June 1991 and the final Battletoads game to date was released on 1994. However, attempts to branch out of its video game origins were less successful. It was adapted into a cartoon, but cartoon produced nothing more than a single pilot. While the franchise has had no new entries in decades, Rash was made into a playable character in Killer Instinct 2013. Gameplay is a fusion of beat-em-up fighting and platforming. However, the games also incorporate other gameplay styles like racing and climbing stages. The franchise, especially the original game, is famous for its extreme difficulty to the point that the original is frequently considered one of the hardest NES games ever made. It has also crossed over with fellow beat-em-up franchise, Double Dragon, in Battletoads & Double Dragon.
