Her name is a pun on A.I. and the Japanese/Chinese word for love. She is the mascot of AI Channel and is a 'Virtual_Youtuber,' meaning she does similar things as real human Youtubers (uploading vlogs, Q/As, doing video game playthroughs), but the difference is that she is an anime-esque character created by Project A.I., which consists of Morikura_En (森倉円), Tomitake (トミタケ) and Tda. The channel made its debut on November 29, 2016, and became immensely popular with her videos being translated into many languages with her success paving the way for more 3D Virtual Youtubers to rise such as Mirai Akari and Kaguya Luna, and launching the Virtual Youtuber industry and is also responsible for coining the term virtual youtuber. Her success has even led to characters from franchises that predate vtubers such as Hello Kitty to try their hand at the format. She has two channels, the regular A.I. Channel and a channel devoted to video game playthroughs. Due to her status as the first vtuber, she is often treated like a sempai figure whenever she appears alongside other virtual youtubers. Her popularity grew to the point that she even became the star of a 2018 Japanese variety TV program called Kizuna AI's Beat Scramble, something that is exceptional for a youtuber let alone a virtual one. She also became a playable character in the games Dolls Order and Azur Lane. Ai is a cheerful and energetic girl/ advanced AI program who resides inside an all white room. As an AI program, she can't leave said room, but she maintains a mostly positive and upbeat attitude. However, said positivity slips whenever she plays a horror game as she is easily frightened. She can also occasionally grow overconfident only to be comically proven wrong shortly afterwards. Although she has a seemingly innocent personality and demeanor, she can act perverted when other attractive girls are involved. She is voiced by a human voice actress, but her identity was kept secret, something that would become standard procedure for many corporate vtubers. Kizuna herself is treated and promoted as if she were a real person on live show appearances, interviews, etc. She has also branched out into voice acting, making her voice acting debut in the anime Mahou_Shoujo_Site as Hachi. In her voice roles, she is credited as Kizuna Ai and not by the actual voice actress that plays her. She has also branched into music, releasing albums and performs the theme song for the virtual youtuber crossover anime Virtual-san_wa_miteiru. Starting in 2019, AI Channel started facing some behind the scenes troubles with its management company active8, which led to Ai being voiced by multiple voice actresses, all of whose identities are kept secret, for a total of three different Kizuna Ais. This change was initially unexplained and was controversial enough that active8 sent a public document explaining the situation. The original voice actress still performed all of Ai's songs, but her Youtube video appearances became more sporadic with the other two playing Ai more often. The three different versions of Ai are distinguished by their hairclips. The original Ai doesn't wear one, one wears a yellow clip Ai-pii_(Kizuna_Ai), and the third wears a blue clip Love-chan_(Kizuna_Ai). After years of keeping her identity a secret, Kizuna AI's original voice actress was confirmed to be Kasuga_Nozomi_(seiyuu) on April 24, 2020, making Ai one of the rare instances in the vtuber industry where the actor for a corporate vtuber explicitly confirmed their vtuber identity. Kasuga also started a youtube channel of her own the same year, where she appears as herself. This public confirmation came with the announcement that Kizuna Ai would separate from her previous company, Active8, to form a new one solely dedicated to managing Kizuna Ai. Kasuga acted as an advisor for the new company. Soon afterwards, the original Ai returned to being the sole star of the main channel. Ai-pii and Love-chan were given a new channel dedicated to them called Love-pii_Channel and received a design change to further distinguish them from Ai. After a big concert called Kizuna AI The Last Live “hello, world 2022,” that premiered on February 26, 2022, Ai went on an indefinite hiatus. Although her channel went mostly defunct, the Kizuna Ai brand still produced new Ai-related content, such as an anime called Kizuna_to_allele. She is also known for her close relationship with fellow Virtual Youtuber Kaguya Luna whose videos she has praised. The two of them have collaborated on multiple special videos together.
