The novel series began on June 1, 2011 and concluded on December 28, 2011. It was adapted into two anime by Kyoto_Animation in 2012. One of the anime is a standard 12 episode series while the other is a series of shorts called Chuunibyou Demo Koi Ga Shitai! Lite. The anime adaptation is directed by Ishihara Tatsuya and written by Hanada Jukki. Music is composed by Nijine and the character designs are by Ikeda_Kazumi. A movie, Takanashi Rikka Kai: Gekijō-ban Chūnibyō Demo Koi ga Shitai!, which retells the events of the first season from Rikka's perspective was released on September 14, 2013. The second season Chuunibyou Demo Koi ga Shitai! Ren, which began airing on January 8, 2014, follows the same format as the first with a series of short episodes titled Lite being broadcast at the same time as the main series. The title translates to Despite the adolescent delusions, I want to fall in love! The English localization, however, translates the title as Love, Chunibyou, & other Delusions! Chuunibyou is a Japanese slang term that describes a person, usually a teenager in junior high school or so but people older can be called this, who would suddenly act like someone who knows far more than they really do or believe that they have supernatural powers. Protagonist Togashi Yuuta was the latter in his junior high school years. He characterized himself as the Dark Flame Master and acted like an antiheroic protagonist of a fantasy series, but this alienated his peers and he spent his junior high school years friendless. Yuuta is now attending a high school far away from his old junior high and he is the only student from his junior high attending said school. Yuuta resolves to distance himself from his Dark Flame Master days and have a normal social life. Before he attends his first class, he decides to briefly act like the Dark Flame Master one last time where no one is around to get it out of his system. Unfortunately for him, he soon discovers that someone was watching his Dark Flame Master performance. And said person is Takanashi Rikka, a girl who exhibits all the symptoms of the latter definition of chunnibyou and is also his neighbor in the apartment he lives in. She takes a liking to him and Yuuta finds that he can't avoid her, he doesn't know of a way to cure her delusions, and he discovers that he's finding it difficult to let go of his Dark Flame Master ways. The two of them form an oddball relationship as Rikka drags Yuuta into her misadventures while he desperately tries to get both of them to act like 'normal people'. While the anime shares the same basic premise as the original novel, the anime goes in a different direction story-wise; the anime adds a few characters that are not in the original novel as well as new story elements. The series emphasizes the dissonance between the chuuni characters' imaginations and real life both for comedic value and for pathos. Whenever the characters 'fight,' the series suddenly and briefly turns into a fantasy action series with the characters wielding massive and powerful weapons and throwing around destructive spells, but then the series shows the real 'fight' which is much less dramatic than the action seen in the chuuni delusions. The anime's Blu-ray release also includes a series of short specials called Depth of Field. Unlike the main series, these shorts take Rikka and Sanae and transplant them into a post apocalyptic mecha action story where the two chuuni girls are mecha pilots.
