Now Viewing: gewehr_98Tag type: General Mauser's Gewehr 98 (German: Gewehr, "rifle") was the German military's standard service rifle from 1898-1935. It is a bolt-action rifle derived from the Gewehr 71 and Gewehr 88. In 1935, the G98 was replaced by the better-known Karabiner 98k (Karabiner, "carbine" / kurz, "short"), which served through World War II. The Gewehr 98's bolt-action system survives in the contemporary M 98 civilian rifle. The G98 can be distinguished from a K98 by examining the rifle's bolt: a G98 has a straight bolt and a K98 has a curved bolt. The curved bolt is ergonomically better and helps to fire faster. Context clues can sometimes help in identifying a gun (World War I-era uniforms vs. WWII uniforms, etc.) but not always. As seen in post #3408415, sometimes artist's error can result in a G98 having a curved bolt or vice versa. If this is the case, go ahead and abide by the context to determine the rifle's model, since ultimately it belongs to a finished piece depicting that time period.
