Tag refers to images referencing the 1993 anime adaptation of the Uchū Ichi no Musekinin Otoko novel series by Yoshioka Hitoshi. It is a space opera comedy that was animated by Tatsunoko_Production and directed by Mashimo Koichi. It was written by Mashimo and Kawasaki Hiroyuki. The soundtrack was composed by Kawai Kenji. It ran from January 25, 1993 to July 19, 1993. It is set in a distant future where humanity, represented by the United Planets Space Force, is embroiled in military conflict with an empire of militaristic humanoid aliens called the Raalgon. Everyone is on high alert and tensions are high amongst the space force while everyone prepares for war, but in stumbles Justy Ueki Tylor, a young man so carefree and cheerful that he comes across as irresponsible. After somehow saving a retired admiral in a hostage situation, he is allowed to join the UPSF. The higher ups, who think their newest recruit is just a fool who won't amount to much, saddle him with the task of being the captain of the worst ship in the army, the Soyokaze. Everyone believes that the Soyokaze is doomed to be destroyed and quickly forgotten about--except Tylor, against all odds, manages to lead the ship to victory in battle after battle to the point that he and his crew have caught the eye of the Raalgon military. This forces everyone to confront the enigma behind Tylor: What is the secret to his success, is he a tactical genius or merely a lucky fool? The series was followed by an OVA series that ran from October 1, 1994 to August 1, 1996. The original novels also concluded the same year. While Yoshioka remained active in producing new entries in the series in the ensuing decades, the anime franchise lay dormant until it was revived in 2017 with the distant sequel, Musekinin Galaxy Tylor, with a new cast and crew.
