It was produced by Miyamoto_Shigeru. It was released in 1996 for the Nintendo_64 and was highly successful. It was the first Mario Kart game to use 3d graphics. As Super Mario Kart was already pseudo 3d, the gameplay is not altered too much. The game was the first Mario game used the Donkey Kong Country version of Donkey Kong, replacing Donkey Kong Jr. The game is also unusual amongst Mario Kart games in that the incarnation of the series staple Rainbow Road that appears in this game is considerably easier. The game allowed up to 4 human players to play the game. The game also introduced the notorious series staple, the Blue Spiny Shell. However, it's first appearance lacked many of the item's more infamous functions. The item is usually given to human players falling behind and upon being released it pursues the racer in first place knocking away anyone it its way. Once it hits its target, it functions like the other shells and sends the target flying straight up for a moment, slowing it down. Princess Peach's castle from Super Mario 64 featured prominently in one race course, Royal Raceway. It was even possible to visit the front yard of the course, the exact location where Super Mario 64 began. However, doing so is impractical in the middle of a race, and it is impossible to go inside the castle. The race courses Mario Raceway, Sherbet Land, Jungle Parkway, and Bowser's Castle were graphically updated and brought back in Mario Kart Wii. The battle arena Skyscraper was also brought back. Mario Kart 7 did the same for Koopa Beach, Luigi Raceway, Kalimari Desert, and the battle arena Big Donut.
