Now Viewing: victorian_romance_emmaTag type: Copyright A historical romantic drama created by Mori_Kaoru. The manga debuted in January 2002 and concluded in May 2006. It was adapted into two twelve episode seasons of anime. The anime is animated by Studio Pierrot. It is directed by Kobayashi Tsuneo and written by Ikeda Mamiko. Music is composed by Kunihiko Ryo. The characters are designed by Shimizu_Keiko and Kusumoto_Yuko. The anime adaptation is generally faithful but the second season deviates more from the manga. The series is unusual for anime/manga for being set in Victorian England and for going to great lengths to render it as accurately as possible. Mori has a strong interest in England and hired Murakami Riko as a historical consultant. Murakami would also fulfill the same role in the anime adaptation. The anime is notable for having a purely instrumental soundtrack with no vocal songs of any kind. Emma (no last name) is a maid working underneath the retired governess Kelly Stownar. Emma is an orphan from an extremely poor background and has no place to call home. Stowner hires her after witnessing her selling flowers on the street and raises Emma to be a superb maid as well as teaching her how to read and write. Her tutelage proves to be successful as Emma is noted for being remarkably dignified for her social stature. Emma catches the attention of the young nobleman named William Jones who is instantly smitten with her the moment they meet. Emma is shy and reluctant to openly display her feelings even as she falls for William and Stownar encourages Emma to pursue the relationship. Unfortunately, the budding lovers are faced with steep obstacles to their relationship. As dignified as Emma is, she is still a poor maid and is viewed as such by William's family. William's strict father Richard firmly rejects the relationship and wants William to marry a woman who is of the same social class. To that end, he encourages a relationship between William and Eleanor Campbell who is also in love with William. . . The series became quite popular and inspired an Emma themed maid cafe in Shinjuku. Mori herself also has an interest in maids. After the manga's conclusion, Mori has also created additional Emma stories focusing on the supporting cast called Emma: Further Tales. The series has no relation to the Jane Austen novel Emma.
