She was born on May 15, 1989 in Orange County, United States, making her the second oldest member of the group. Although she was born in America, she is not considered to be one of the American members of SNSD since she moved away very early in her life. As an infant her family moved to Kuwait, right as the Gulf War reached its height. This experience left her with a fear of loud noises. Her father Lee Soo-young is the older brother of SM Entertainment's founder, Lee Soo-man. Soo-young, who was in a college band, influenced her to become a singer and she initially joined her father's company Starlight Entertainment and was supposed to be part of a singing duo called Sugar, but said plans fell through and she auditioned for, and was accepted by, her uncle's company. She joined Girls Generation in August 2007. Along with Taeyeon, she is one of the shortest members of SNSD, which is often poked fun at in variety show appearances. She is also notably one of the most daring members of the group, showing no fear when handling wild animals during variety appearances, and in one concert, assisted in apprehending a crazed fan attempting to kidnap Taeyeon.
