The first game was released on December 8, 2005 for the Playstation 2. The title translates to Like a Dragon but was localized in English as Yakuza. The series is highly successful, selling 4 million copies worldwide by September 2010. It has been adapted into a live action film and received a canon live action film prequel. They follow the adventures of Kiryuu Kazama who finishes a ten year prison sentence at the start of the first game. Soon after he leaves prison, he is embroiled in a gang conflict as he discovers that his old clan, the Tojo clan, has had money stolen from them and the entire Japanese underworld is looking for said money. His friend Sawamura Yumi has also suddenly gone missing. Kazama sets out to find the money and his friend and gets involved in more gang clashes. The games are often compared to the Shenmue series of games, which were also created by Sega. However, this series has managed to have more financial success and avoided Shenmue's fate of being cut short. Like said series, the games' sequels, with the exception of some non-canon spinoff games, continue directly after the previous game's conclusion making each game like a chapter of a longer narrative. Besides the combat, there are also many non-plot important and non-violent mini-games and sidequests that the player can do and many characters that the player can interact with. The series combat revolves around brutal street brawling, both hand-to-hand and with weapons. There are also quite a few action commands where the player follows the button prompts to either dodge an attack or unleash a devastating one of their own. The player can also use various items as weapons. As the player progresses through the game, his/her character learns more moves that he can use. The series is known for blending gritty crime stories with quirky humor. While the main plot is mostly serious, many of the side quests are quite humorous in tone.
