It is a live action tokusatsu action series that aired from September 4, 2011 to August 26, 2012. The series is meant to commemorate both the 40th anniversary of the Kamen Rider franchise and the 50th anniversary of spaceflight so space is central to this Kamen Rider series' story. The series' tone was also inspired by the March 2011 Sendai Earthquake. The creators, who were already planning the series when the earthquake hit, realized that this series would be the first Kamen Rider series after said earthquake and they were inspired to make Fourze into a hero who will bring smiles to people, which is also why this installment of the Kamen Rider franchise adopts a more lighthearted tone. The series is written by Nakashima Kazuki, Sanjo Riku, and Hasegawa Keiichi. It is directed by Sakamoto Koichi, Ishida Hidenori, Shibasaki Takayuki, Morota Satoshi, Tasaki Ryuta, Yamaguchi Kyohei, and Watanabe Katsuya. The monsters are designed by Asamiya_Kia. Music is composed by Hisagi Shuhei. Amanogawa High is a normal Japanese high school, except for the fact that it attracts an abnormal amount of strange monsters called Zodiarts, which tend to suddenly appear and wreak havoc. The Zodiarts are monsters that are activated by people who come into possession of Zodiarts switches which are given by a mysterious and powerful being that lingers in the vicinity of the school. The people who possess the switches are disgruntled in some way and upon activating the switch, a Zodiart monster that they can control is created. They are secretly opposed by Utahoshi Kengo and Jojima Yuki who do their best to protect the school from the Zodiarts while keeping their activities a secret. They have a secret base of operations on the moon called the Rabbit Hutch and they are teleported there by entering a special seemingly innocuous locker in their school. Despite Kengo's extensive knowledge of the Zodiarts, Kengo is severely hindered by his fragile physical health yet he insists on continuing the battle and not getting anyone else involved in the battle against the Zodiarts. This changes once he meets the boisterous and idealistic transfer student Kisaragi Gentarou. Gentarou dresses like a delinquent but he proclaims that his mission is to befriend everyone at Amanogawa High, even the people he initially does not get along with. After encountering a Zodiart, he learns about Kengo's battle against the Zodiarts and insists on helping out, an idea that Yuki, Gentarou's childhood friend supports. Kengo is reluctant but his poor physical health prevents him from doing the fighting that Gentarou is capable of so Gentarou is given the equipment needed to defeat the Zodiarts and becomes Kamen Rider Fourze. Gentarou becomes the main fighter against the Zodiarts, but he has not forgotten his stated mission of befriending everyone and continues to befriend people while battling the Zodiarts and even befriending the Zodiart Switchers themselves. His actions cause more and more students to be added into the Rabbit Hutch which Gentarou calls the Kamen Rider club. As the Kamen Rider club fights to protect their school, they gradually uncover the true reason behind the influx of Zodiart monsters in their school. The TV series characters have also appeared in a few movies, which include The Shogun and the 21 Core Medals, Movie War Mega Mix, Super Hero Taisen, Space Here We Come!, Movie War Ultimatum, Super Hero Taisen Z. It has also been adapted into a video game and crossed over the anime/manga Crayon shin-chan. As the characters are in high school, this series often alternates between scenes focusing on high school life, complete with problems often faced by high schoolers, and tokusatsu action. This installment of Kamen Rider has a strong focus on friendship and what it means to be a true friend is a recurring theme.
